U.S. Pecans

The pecan industry in the United States may not receive the same focus as almonds, pistachios or other nuts, but our country has a proud tradition as a cultivator of this fine tree nut. Throughout Texas and southern regions of America, pecan production is incredibly strong. As some recent industry reports indicate, growers may be able to encourage new market opportunities domestically if pecans can be branded better to new consumers.

This article published by redOrbit discusses the findings of a report published by researchers at New Mexico State University, which explored the demographics of those consuming American-grown pecans. The survey found that domestic taste for pecans has stagnated over the past 35 years, even though growers in this country have found an increasing number of foreign markets for their goods.

However, there are ways for the pecan industry to attract new consumers in the United States. Although the survey found that taste was the most important factor in tree nut purchasing decisions, nutritional and health impacts were another major consideration among those surveyed. The authors believe that marketing the antioxidant properties of pecans, along with any other dietary impacts it may provide, should lead plenty in new markets to consider giving this tasty nut a try.

One-fifth of those surveyed for this study reported that they made no conscious effort whatsoever to purchase or even consume tree nuts like pecans. If these individuals could be given a reason to try pecans, they may find it enough to their liking that they’ll consider adding it to their diet. Most regular consumers of pecans are located in the south, where more of these tree nuts are grown, but northern Americans may enjoy them just as well once they learn a few uses for pecans.

Summer of Pecans

We are in the throes of summer and that can mean only one thing: we are doing healthier things, like being outside and taking walks, experiencing sunlight and getting that blood flow going again. While this is a positive thing, summer still makes us uneasy for the simple fact that many of us aren’t healthy and we know it.

With that said, we feel summer’s the best time to remind the world how healthy pecans are. Just eating a handful a day provides your body a boost that’ll propel you through these warm days.  Pecans are vitamin superstores, providing your body with more than 19 vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A and B. High in fiber and healthy unsaturated fat, pecans can lower cholesterol, not to mention make you feel and look younger. This is due to those exciting age defying antioxidants.

So, to summarize – pecans give us vitamins, provide us with a boost and is a time machine that takes us back to younger, fresher bodies. Do you need any more convincing? Start eating pecans! Put pecans in your yogurt, your soup – make pecan pie, or just eat a handful of gourmet pecans from The Davis Mountain Nut Company!

Pecans as Gifts

Pecan Gift Ideas

Pecans are one of America’s favorite nuts. Used ubiquitously in the South, the pecan is delicious cooked in food or as a snack. And with wedding season and summer just around the corner, here are a few pecan ideas that make amazing gifts!

Pecans are so tasty, that they are often eaten just raw and plain. So your intended might be delighted with a simple box of raw pecans, beautifully wrapped, with a personal card. Also simple salted pecans are a favorite.

Flavored pecans are also all the rage. Chocolate covered, they are  wonderful and healthy things to snack on while watching TV, or reading a book. The recipient will just adore these confections during some well-deserved unwinding. Pecans can also be roasted and uniquely flavored. For your cinnamon-loving  friends, roasted pecans can be coated in a sugar/cinnamon coating. If your intended likes spice, roasted pecans are rolled in layers of flavor as exotic as wasabi or more common like cayenne or chili peppers for a little zing.

Then of course, there are the pecan-ed foods, like pecan pie – a staple of the South – , muffins dotted with pecans , and vegetable platters with roasted pecan bits. Try baking chicken encrusted with pecan pieces. It is a delicious, healthy, and unusual way to use this famous nut.

Whether they are raw, salted, candied, spiced, or used in cooking something very special for that special occasion, you can be sure they will be a treat not soon forgotten. Pecans are a delicious and healthy way to show how much you care.
